+ Issue
In 2001, energy supplies tightened in California, power outages loomed and prices soared at hugely inflated rates. In response, Southern California Edison, an electric company, faced the enormous challenge of avoiding bankruptcy while continuing to provide its 12 million customers with electricity. Financial and supply uncertainties caused by the crisis had damaged the reputation of all energy-related entities, including that of SCE - the nation's second largest utility.
+ Strategic Idea
In the face of the California energy crisis, SCE turned to Winner & Associates, a Publicis Consultants | agency. After in-depth consideration of the issues and after conducting extensive public opinion research, Winner & Associates concluded that SCE's image could best be supported by emphasizing its century-long relationship with customers and keeping the focus on reliability.
+ Implementation
Key campaign staff moved into SCE's corporate offices to provide continuous and immediate communications counsel. Additionally, they developed a strategic communications program in support of SCE's immediate objectives and longer-term goals, developed and implemented an image and branding campaign, and featured television spots and ads throughout the crisis.
+ Results
With the help of Winner & Associates, SCE emerged from a challenging crisis situation and is now realizing many of its longer-term objectives. The company resumed shareholder dividends in late 2003 and set precedent in reforming California's deregulation law. Today, Winner & Associates creates and produces all branding, issues, and marketing advertising on behalf of this Fortune 200 company.
